Adopting or Fostering?

Thank you for your interest in adopting/fostering with Pinhoti Animal Rescue! There is a great deal of responsibility when taking care of an animal. We want to make sure you/your family are geared up for the adventure and the pet you choose is willing to accept you into their life.

Which Shall I Choose?

When choosing whether to adopt or foster you need to have a clear understanding of what each entails:

  • Adoption is a permanent agreement to become the animal's legal owner. That animal then becomes part of the family long-term.

    • Adoption Expectations

      • Am I choosing an animal based on compatibility, rather than appearance alone?

      • Am I prepared for the possibility that the animal may behave differently after settling into my home?

      • Have I asked the rescue to clarify anything I’m unsure about?

      • You’ll never be alone in the process—support is always available.

  • Foster care is a temporary arrangement where you care for the animal(s) while living with you. The goal is to find a loving person/family for that animal to permanently live with.

    • Fostering Expectations

      • Feeding and daily care

      • Administering medications, if needed

      • Basic training and exercise

      • Most importantly, providing stability and patience.

      • Our rescue team will provide for veterinary expenses and adoption meet-and-greets.

      • You’ll never be alone in the process—support is always available.

Important Things to Consider Before

Adopting or Fostering

  • Lifestyle & Commitment

    • Am I prepared for a long-term commitment that may last 10–15+ years?

    • Do I have enough time each day for feeding, exercise, attention, training, and companionship?

    • Will the animal receive adequate care if I travel or work long hours?

    • Is everyone in my household prepared for the responsibility?

  • Housing

    • Are pets allowed where I live?

    • Is my home and yard appropriate and secure for this animal?

    • If I rent, have I checked pet restrictions, deposits, and breed/size limitations?

  • Financial Responsibility

    • Can I afford food and routine care?

    • Can I afford vaccinations, parasite prevention, medications, annual examinations or treatment if the animal becomes sick or injured?

    • Am I prepared for unexpected veterinary expenses?

  • Other Pets & Family

    • Will this animal be compatible with my current pets?

    • Are there young children or other family members whose needs should be considered?

    • Does the animal’s temperament and activity level fit the household?

  • Training & Behavior

    • Am I prepared to work through house-training, obedience, or other behavioral issues?

    • Do I understand that an adopted animal may need time to adjust?

    • Am I willing to be patient if the animal is shy, fearful, anxious, or unsure?

  • Health & Special Needs

    • Do I understand the animal’s current medical needs?

    • Have I asked about vaccinations, medications, spay/neuter status, parasite prevention, and medical history?

    • If adopting an animal with special needs, can I provide the additional care required?

  • Safety

    • Do I have a plan for preventing escapes?

    • Will I provide proper identification, such as a microchip and ID tag?

    • Have I pet-proofed my home?

  • Daily Care

    • Can I commit to regular grooming and nail care?

    • Am I prepared to clean up after the animal?

    • Do I have the necessary supplies before bringing the animal home?

  • Most Important Question ❤️

    • Am I prepared to make this animal a permanent member of my family—not just until it becomes inconvenient?

Please take all of this in to careful consideration and prayer before making your choice.
